Fashion - April

Color Coded Confidence
--- Felicia Chen
Springtime is finally coming our way, but it’s not here just yet! In anticipation though, here are some outfits inspired by Refinery29’s 2011’s 6 Coolest Nail Polish Trends to help you smoothly make that transition from winter to spring. So, here are six outfits featuring six very awesome nail polishes.

Nude
Nude has been not only a nail polish trend, but a fashion and makeup trend as well. It seems that this color goes with just about anything and for the transition from winter to spring, a nude floral dress is the perfect reminder of what’s to come. Since the weather is still a bit chilly, unless you happen to live in LA, wear black tights underneath the dress and throw on a blazer for a clean, put-together look.

Pale Blue
Blue comes in all different shades and one of those is pale. Pale blue reminds you of clear blue skies and the crystal clean water of the Bahamas, or perhaps your pool. Incorporate this color into your wardrobe through a pale blue blazer with bows and a cross-body bag that leaves your hands free to carry that cup of coffee or to text away on your cellphone. Keep the rest of the outfit simple and clutter-free by sticking to a limited color palette; in this case, black and white is just right.

Peachy Pink
Peachy pink...a wonderful mixture of peach and pink. Kind of reminds you of Easter, doesn’t it? To celebrate this light pink color with a hint of peach, drape a comfy, pullover sweatshirt over a yellow tank top. Keep the look crisp with white skinny jeans and Sperry boat shoes. Embrace the recent trend of feather earrings with a pair of peachy pink feathers and accessorize with a leather messenger bag.

Lavender
Ahhh...the wonderful scent of lavender! Too bad lavender nail polish doesn’t actually smell like the flower it’s representing. Anyways, start the outfit with a lavender plaid shirt or flannel. If the weather is colder than usual, opt for a long sleeve shirt underneath the flannel instead of just a tank top. Take a break from those skinny jeans and go with bootcut or flared jeans instead over a pair of Converse. Finish the look off with a cream colored scarf with thread detailing and fringe.

Gun-Metal Gray
Gun-metal gray is not just gray, it’s a special gray all dressed up in sparkle and shine as is this gun-metal gray outfit. The simple white tank top is accompanied by an oversized cascading ruffle cardigan sweater. Have a craving to wear shorts despite the weather? Well you still can, just wear tights underneath to keep your legs warm. Add shine and metal to the outfit with a metallic leather clutch and some unique, quirky gun-metal jewelry.

Topcoats
So we all know what topcoats are when referring to nail polish, but what does this exactly mean when translating it into fashion? An amazing coat, of course! This metallic silver jacket will surely have heads turning. The jacket adds sparkle and adds a little extra something to a very bright and colorful floral dress. Since the jacket and dress are already striking on their own, there is no need to over accessorize so keep the rest of the outfit simple with flats, minimal and conservative jewelry, and a simple clutch.

    Mall Crawl - April 2011
--- Christy Lin

I have a confession to make: I almost didn’t make it to the mall this month. With midterms, spring break, and then the rather drastic dive back into school, as well as other extenuating circumstances, I just could not get anywhere (which is unfortunate since I’m living in the City of Angels). I actually thought that in place I could just do a sort of “Internet Special” of the Crawl, but alas, I simply could not get a feel for the websites, let alone an idea of what I should be passing along as far as trends and looks to be ready for. There are just aspects of the shopping activity that you can’t get online. First is the social aspect of being in a mall; then there is the fact that the mall is an invaluable source and tool for trend-spotting; and finally, if you go to the store then you don’t have to worry about those utterly ridiculous exorbitant shipping costs.  So yes, this comes a bit later than usual, but I found my way up to Beverly Hills, and it is here nonetheless; a new month, a new season, and a whole lotta new fashion! Who else is ready?!
For all my women out there, they say that April showers bring May flowers, but despite the rain and occasional storm cloud on the horizon, these blossoms will not be balked! That’s right, floral prints are in full swing, showing up as shirts, skirts, pants, and the very bohemian, floral maxi dress. H&M probably has my favorite selection of these items, my ultimate favorites being their $20 maxi dress, and $15 jumpsuit. It seems like an almost hippy thing to do, wearing nothing but earthy floral prints, but it can also be a very fun a flirty look. I’m not telling you to revert back to the 70s (you know flower power and peace signs), but don’t be afraid to get girly! Find at least one good piece, whether it be a blouse, a short skirt, or a full length dress, and wear it up or wear it down. Floral is definitely one of the more versatile trends, and it is one that will keep coming back no matter how tired it feels at times. For now though, a great way to play up florals is to take advantage of some of the new denim trends coming out, namely short overalls, and cropped, cuffed skinny jeans. The overalls should be vintage-y, but rest assured, these are not your Uncle Bubba’s farmer overalls. Forever 21 has two or three choices in short overalls, and since there are so many ways to wear them, you really only need one. Try them with just a plain wife-beater to keep it simple, or dress it up with a cut-up t-shirt or baggy tank. You could also dress it up with a nice fitted floral blouse (ah-ha, see what I did there? Hehe) and combat or utility boots.

For all my fellas, it’s starting to get warm out there…by that of course I mean the weather, and there IS something you can do about it. We’re basically keeping with this recurring theme of casual and laid-back, only now, we’re dressing it up (wait a minute, how the hell is that supposed to work?). I got two words for you: Linen. Shirt. They’re lightweight, relaxed, and they don’t get too warm or constricting, making it the perfect sort of transition-trend to take us into the warmer months. Go for light colors of course, since dark washed linen tends to look kind of tacky, and pair it with fitted jeans (do not tuck it in!!!). There are plenty of choices, including short and long sleeves, but personally I would go with a long sleeve shirt that you can roll up (it’s kinda sexy, not gonna lie) and keep it simple, don’t worry about patterns or designs, one solid color will do.  Just a nice button down shirt will go a long way this month actually, not necessarily a dressy button down, but something other than a t-shirt or polo. This shouldn’t be a shirt that you have to iron every time it comes out, just something that you can throw on like a t-shirt and go. Like I said, you should look relaxed; people should be able to tell that you’re comfortable and you should be able to wear these looks without worrying about wrinkling anything or choking on your collar.

Ok y’all, I’ve got real work to do. It’s been a pleasure, and once again, I apologize for the tardiness of it all. Next month’s mall crawl will be on time, I promise, if not…well, let’s not worry about that, because it will be on time! Peace out!!
