Fashion - June

Mall Crawl - June
--- Christy Lin

I’M LATE, I’M LATE! FOR A VERY IMPORTANT DATE!!! Somebody go on and slap me with a watch already! DX
Ok, now that that’s over, apologies my lovelies, but for once *snort*, procrastination got the better of me...and then karma did as well. Yes, as punishment for not getting this mall crawl done in time, despite having gone to the mall and everything, your resident art editor/fashion guru has spent the last 3 days with her head down the toilet due to an ugly little monster known as food poisoning (very likely salmonella, but I’d like to think that karma has some mercy). I will spare you the details, just know that I am now fully repentant and ready to pay homage to the trend watches for this merry month of June! On with the show!
As it is the beginning of summer, and therefore just an all-around lazy time for most of us, the looks to look out for definitely reflect that. It’s time to hit the beach! Or rather, go somewhere that involves you doing nothing more than laying down and getting burnt to a crisp while listening to children play, and waves roll in and out of the shore *wistful sigh*. Ahem, anyways...

Ladies, since you can’t spend all your time in the sun and on the sand (or I suppose you could, but you probably don’t want to) the color of the month is Salmon Pink. I can see a few double takes. I’m not sure how else to describe it, but despite its less than awesome title, the color is fun, it’s flirty, and it’s eye catching without raising too many eyebrows. There are plenty of blouses and dresses out there right now spotlighting this color, and I am absolutely in love with it, I just have to work on finding the right shade. With this color especially, shade (or value, or hue...my Color Theory professor will probably shank me for this) is muy importante. Depending on your skin tone, you need to look out for either too much, or too little orange. Too much, and you’ll probably end up looking like a walking, talking traffic cone; too little and your all natural, beautifully sun-kissed tan will end up looking faker than a Snooki. I can’t stress this enough, everyone is going to be a little different, and there are plenty of pieces out there, so go and try them all on until you find a good fit! Got some breezy nights? The other big trend this month is denim. Find a nice, oversized denim shirt and throw it over a cute little cotton sun dress in this month’s color and bam! perfect date night/bon fire/girl’s night outfit.

Fellas, maybe it’s a SoCal thing, but you should really just be aware of one thing, and it’s huge (that’s what he said *snicker*). But yes, Beach Tanks! People, we are so over the farmer’s tans, at least get your shoulders involved now! and what better way than with a cotton tank top that’s just as comfortable and comes with your choice of graphic? Now keep in mind that I’m saying tank top, TANK TOP, not just your run of the mill wife beater. And yes, they come with every graphic under the sun, AND, you can get them virtually everywhere. Remember those casual blazers from last month? Well they’re not out yet, and they go perfect on top of this look if you need that extra bit of cover (but really, aren’t you all supposed to be about showing off them guns?). It’s a very versatile trend and with the choices available, there is certainly at least one out there for everybody.

And we’re done. Again, apologies that the procrastinator in me took hostage of my mind for so long, but not to worry, I’ve got my fight back, and this is my promise to you (cue epic speech music): next month, I WILL get this done on time, and karma WILL NOT have an excuse to get on my back and use me as its ever obedient punching bag. Until then, peace out!

Summer 2011 Swimwear Trends
--- Felicia Chen

Whether you’re out of school already or still suffering through your last weeks, summer is right around the corner which means weeks of lounging by the pool or relaxing on the beach in which case you’ll need a bathing suit. Sure you can pull out that old bathing suit you had from last summer, but why not change it up this year with some bold prints, neon colors, or crazy stripes?
Bathing suit prints range anywhere from florals to tribal motifs.

Stripes are also very popular this summer. When paired with blue and white, they create a nautical feel.

This year’s color choices for the summer include neon, turquoise, seafoam green and deep oranges and pinks.

Bathing suits have also picked up on this season’s hottest trend - color blocking.

While string bikinis made a popular showing on the runway, you can easily find this year’s trends on monokinis, tankinis, bikinis, and whatever other -kinis there are out there. Head over to Victoria’s Secret or Forever21 to grab your swimwear and head out into the sun!
